Military on red alert after Customs warns of planned terrorist attack

Defence HQ intensifies “effective surveillance” to checkmate planned terrorist attack on FCT

Security agencies have gone on red alert across the federal capital territory and adjoining states after a circular emerged warning of impending terrorist attacks on selected targets within the FCT.

Armed forces have intensified “effective surveillance” to checkmate criminal activities, said Maj-Gen John Enenche, coordinator of Defence media operations.

It came after a circular from Nigeria Customs  Service warning that Boko Haram terrorists have set up five camps in hiding in forests from Nasarawa and the FCT to Kogi.

“The Armed Forces in conjunction with other security and response agencies particularly the core intelligence agencies hereby assure the public that preventive and preemptive intelligence are ongoing,” said Enenche

“The general public is thus advised to go about their lawful businesses undeterred.

“Furthermore, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies wish to assure the general public that the offensives against the common enemies of this Nation will not cease until normalcy is restored in all parts of the country.

“Hence, the public is equally enjoined to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity accordingly,” he said.

The military has recently raided camps of Darul Salam in parts of Nasarawa, where it regrouped after being dislodged from Niger state.

It neutralised scores of the terrorists and rescued over 700 of their family members and abductees in the raid following verified intelligence reports on the locations.

Nasarawa state government has also said it is being proactive, in response to the circular from Customs.

The Chief Press Secretary ( CPS ) to the Governor, Ibrahim Addra told Daily Trust on reaction to the circular by the Nigeria Customs Service, ” The government is calling on the citizens to be on alert and the assurances by the leadership of the security agencies are in line with the desire to ensure peace across the country.

” You recall a combined operation towards the end of last month yielded positive results with terrorists and other criminals dislodged from Uttu area of Toto Local Government Area and their camps destroyed.”
