Military, journalists organise walk to promote peace in Plateau

Members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Plateau State Chapter, in collaboration with Operation Safe Haven, a security taskforce maintaining peace in the state, on Sunday, organised a walk to promote peace and unity and create awareness against drug abuse in the state.

The state had in the last 20 years been witnessing series of ethno-religious crisis with many people reportedly killed and millions of naira properties destroyed.

According to the organisers of the event, the peace walk aims at sensitising residents, especially, youths, on the effect of drug abuse and need to live peacefully with one another irrespective of their differences, adding that drug abuse had become a push factor for violence in the state.

Speaking on the essence of the event, Chairman of the Chapel, Polycarp Auta, said the event was organised to correct the impression, particularly among those outside Plateau that the state was not peaceful, stating that “We came out spread the message of peace.”

Also speaking, Team Lead, Strategic Communication, Plateau Peace Building Agency, PPBA, Mr Kenneth Dakop, said “The Walk for Peace” organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Plateau State Council in collaboration with the Military Task Force code named: Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) with particular focus on the menace of drugs and substance abuse, as well as, other social was highly commendable and should be encouraged.

The peace walk began from the state headquarters of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, with participants walking for kilometers to various communities of Jos metropolis to pass messages of peace and importance of togetherness to achieve sustainable development.
