MIGRATION: Nigeria holds national dialogue

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) will hold a National Migration Dialogue (NMD) on Monday (today) to commemorate the 2024 International Migrants Day.

The Federal Commissioner of NCFRMI, Hon. Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, disclosed this in Abuja at the weekend, adding that the event highlights the importance of migration as a transformative force in the world today.

According to him, the dialogue serves as a platform to highlight the federal government’s initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of irregular migration, fostering regular migration pathways, and equipping migrants with the skills and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions to national and global development.

“The event will bring together policymakers, migration experts, civil society organisations, academia, and key stakeholders to deliberate on a theme that resonates with our national priorities and aligns with the global agenda for International Migrants Day.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons,” he said.

The 2024 NMD theme, “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights,” underscores migrants’ invaluable contributions to socio-economic development in their countries of origin and destination.

It also emphasises the urgent need to safeguard their rights, provide access to decent work, ensure accurate information, and facilitate safe and dignified migration pathways.

He said this theme is closely aligned with the global theme for International Migrants Day, which is “Honoring the Contributions of Migrants and Respecting Their Rights.

According to the programme of the event, this year’s dialogue will feature two panel discussions with various intellectuals, practitioners, and civil society representatives.

These panels will address critical topics, including the contributions of Migrants to the socio-economic growth of origin and destination countries, spotlighting how migrants’ skills, innovation, and labour contribute to development at home and abroad while fostering social cohesion and mutual benefits.

Also, the protection of migrants’ rights, access to information, decent work, and documentation will be addressed with discussions centering on ensuring that migrants are informed, protected, and supported to live and work in dignity, with policies that uphold their rights and prevent exploitation.
