Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) Queens, yesterday, defeated Nigeria Customs 64-53 to retain the Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League for the second time consecutively.
The Lagos based team continued their dominance against their opponents from Abuja which they won, 64-60 at the final during the last edition, convincingly outclassing them by a 12-point gap, 18-6 to lead the first quarter.
In the thrilling encounter played at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, MFM maintained their dominance in the second quarter as they increased the margin to 19-point, stamping their authority on the court.
However, the Lagos based team’s authority faced stiff restriction as Nigeria Customs closed a 12- point gap midway of the third quarter, but MFM woke up for their slumber to take charge on the court, ending the quarter with a 12-point gap, 51-39.
Nigeria Customs resilience came to bear at the last quarter, as they pulled strings from all corner to reduce the deficit, but MFM Queens’ spirited determination earned them their second title, by finishing with a 11-point gap, 64-53.
Earlier before the finals, First Bank pipped debutants Royal Aces, 46-45 to win the third place match.
At the end of the final, the president, Nigeria Basketball Federation League, (NBBF) Engr. Musa Kida appreciated the sponsors for their unwavering commitment, describing the league as the pipeline to discovery of talents.
“The NBBF is glad for the partnership we have had with Zenith Bank for over 16 year and we are proud to say that you are a very good example for the corporate world. The league has been the pipeline for the women team,” he said.
The president then presented the dummy cheque of N1.750m and trophy to the winner while the runner-up Nigeria Customs went home with the dummy cheque of N750,000 as First Bank Ladies received N250,000.
