Mercy Aigbe’s engagement, Jay-Z’s featuring Olamide in new album: How celebs fooled Nigerians

The real origin of April fool is debatable but what remains unarguable is that it is a day that pranksters enjoy. The first day of April is one in which people send out false information all to recount the next day by saying April fool. And some Nigerian celebrities did not allow coronavirus to steal this from them as they, once again, fooled millions of Nigerians especially on social media while some news outlets also fell prey to these gimmicks.

On Instagram, Nollywood actress, Mercy Aigbe, took to Instagram where she posted her hand with an engagement ring. She captured the photograph, ‘finally, I said yes to ‘D’ Owner. Thank you God for many chances.’ She followed the photograph with a video of her giggling while the camera zoomed in and out of the ring on her finger. She posted with the video, “My joy knows no bounds.

Agbeke Aya ‘D’ Owner.”

Her post generated comments from top shots in the industry who took turns to congratulate the top actress who left her husband, Lanre Gentry, in a messy divorce after allegations of domestic violence.

The video had over 500, 000 views 17 hours after it was posted while the photograph was liked by over 127,000 fans who expressed their joy at the development. But their joy was short-lived as she posted later that “Thank y’all for the prayers, calls, congratulatory messages, I feel loved but na April fool oooh.”

Debo on his verified Instagram account @mrmacaroni1 posted a photograph where he was dressed in a white flowing gown. He said he had finally decided to change his ‘agbada.’ He later posted on Friday a photograph on his trademark agbada with the caption, “APRIL FOOL. Send me Your Akant number joor… let me freaky it up. Happy New Month guys. Love from Freaky Freaky Daddy.”

On Twitter in Nigeria, Olamide, Femi Kuti fans were celebrating the release of tracklist and cover artwork of American rapper, Jay-Z new album.

The tweet showed the track list titled ‘ascension’ as a new African-themed album from Jay-Z while fans reacted, hailing the track list as another potential Grammy winner.

But neither Jay-Z nor any of his official associates mentioned anything about the new album, the same with the artist listed to be featured in it. Though Jay-

Z was among the trending topics in Nigeria, it was later discovered to be another prank successful, considering the number of engagements.
