The House of Representatives Committee on Health Care Services has queried the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) over its slow action to the current meningitis outbreak in the country.

Deputy Chairman of the committee, Usman Muhammad (APC, Kaduna), said “Our concern is that the distribution of 500,000 doses of vaccines is commencing late; why is it starting now? Does it mean that we can’t take action on something like this before it occurs? You’re starting just today after many people lost their lives?”

Speaking at the emergency meeting, the Executive Secretary of the agency, Dr Faisal Shuaibu, said vaccines would be delivered from the United Kingdom and India.

Represented by the director of community health services in the agency, Dr Emmanuel Odu, the ES said the first batch of vaccines, comprising 823,000 doses, would arrive from UK, while 2 million would come from India.

He said the agency had already disbursed 500,000 vaccines to the affected states and that the distribution commenced in Zamfara State yesterday.
