An elderly Chinese couple have lived and raised their children in a cave for the past 54 years.
81-year-old Liang Zifu and 77-year-old Li Suying started living in the cave near Nanchong city, south-west China, after they wed because they couldn’t afford a house, reports the People’s Daily Online.
Now, they have created three bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room in the cave.
Liang found the cave three years after marrying, the pair settled there.
They used to live with three other families.
‘There were four households before, but they have all moved out,’ 81-year old Liang said.
The cave now has three bedrooms, one kitchen and a living room.
The couple also have a pigsty and also their own electricity supply.
They grow their own food in farms on top of the cave.
During harvest season, Liang goes uphill with ropes and a wicker basket, filling it with crops.
Local authorities have been trying to persuade the couple to move out however they have refused saying they have got used to living in the ‘comfortable home’.
Although the authorities have even offered the couple a better place to live in, the couple claim that it is cooler outside in summer and warmer in winter.
All of the couple’s children now have their own families however they are unwilling to live in the cave.
People have been discussing the couple’s story on social media site Weibo.
One user wrote: ‘I envy them for staying away from the hustle and bustle.’
While another commented: ‘There’s even a TV, it’s so nice.’
And one said: ‘What will happen if they fall sick?’
