Medical tourism: Reps’ Speaker advocates investments in health sector

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for increased investment in the country’s health sector to address medical tourism and generate forex to save the naira.

According to a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, he made the call during a visit by a delegation from the First Surat Group of Companies, a Turkish conglomerate operating in Nigeria.

He lamented that medical tourism is a significant issue in Nigeria as many citizens travel abroad for medical treatment due to inadequate facilities at home.

He said, “A significant number of the citizens of this country are going on medical tourism. If we can have or replicate what we have in the developed countries, Nigeria would be able to save a lot of foreign exchange, and we will be able to save our naira.”

The Speaker said the meeting between the Nigerian officials and representatives of the Turkish conglomerate highlighted the importance of collaboration between the two countries for mutual benefits.

He commended the group for its contributions to Nigeria and urged them to work with the newly created Committee on Corporate Social Responsibility of the House.

During the meeting with the Speaker and other officials, the leader of the delegation, Mr Yasar Ovenc and his colleagues outlined the activities of their company in Nigeria over the past 27 years in both health care and education sectors.
