Martha, breaking barriers as a female mechanic

In the bustling city of Kaduna, amidst the roaring of engines and clatter of tools, Martha Peter Okafor stands out as a beacon of inspiration in a traditionally male-dominated field of automotive mechanics, at  a mechanic garage located in the bustling Mogadishu Industrial Layout within the metropolis.

As one of the few female mechanics in the state, Martha’s journey serves as a testament to perseverance, determination and breaking gender stereotypes.

Despite the challenges and prejudices she faced, she chose to pursue her passion for mechanics, undeterred by the notion that it was a man’s job.

Her dedication and expertise have earned her respect and admiration among her colleagues and customers alike.

Through her skillful work and unwavering commitment, Martha has not only proven herself capable in a male-dominated industry, but has become a source of inspiration for other women aspiring to break into non-traditional roles.

Narrating her journey into the world of mechanics to Daily Trust, she said it began with a simple desire and passion for the job. “I told my family I wanted to be a mechanic, so my mother’s brother, who was a mechanic in this garage, brought me here to learn the work,” Martha said.

When asked which vehicles she wanted to specialise in, Martha boldly chose Mercedes Benz, thus setting her on a unique path.

She reflects on her choice, stating, “I chose to be a mechanic because it’s not common in the society, and people always see it as a man’s job.”

Martha’s determination to challenge societal norms and excel in her chosen profession is evident in her words: “I want to make people to know that women too can be mechanics and even do it better.”

She draws strength from the belief that women are equally capable, if not more so, as exemplified by the adage, “What men can do, women can do even better.”

Her journey hasn’t been without hurdles. Martha recalls the initial struggles, stating, “It wasn’t easy for me, but with God’s strength, I persevered.” From battling stress-induced illnesses to facing skepticism from customers, Martha remained resilient.

“Part of the challenge is that it’s not safe for a woman to be under the car,” she explains. “But since you know what you are doing, you overlook all those challenges and focus on your work.”

Grateful for the mentorship she received, Martha acknowledges her boss’s role in her development: “I learned a lot from my boss, and I always appreciate his encouragement.”

Now proficient in various areas of the job, Martha has overcome gender stereotypes and gained acceptance among her peers. “They carry me along like other boys here; there is nothing like discrimination,” she said.

Looking ahead, Martha dreams of furthering her education in mechanical engineering, adding, “I believe I will be able to sponsor myself in school with what I am earning”.

Her advice to aspiring female mechanics is simple, yet profound: “Take up the challenge and don’t allow anyone to scare you with talk about the job being hard,” she added.

With determination and perseverance, Martha aims to set up her mechanic company in the future, to provide opportunities for other women and youths in her community.

As Martha continues her journey, she urges fellow women to embrace hard work and skills development.

“There is no more place for laziness in this world. Those with hands-on skills can go anywhere with the little they make or get from their skills.”

Kabiru Abubakar, the Public Relations Officer of the Mogadishu Mechanic Garage, expressed satisfaction with Martha’s job.

He said, “Most of the customers Martha attends to hardly complain about her work. Some of her customers even give her gifts.
