The Nigerian Navy, Thursday, said it had obtained from France, a new purpose-built hydrographic survey vessel to enable it to chart the country’s waterways for enhanced maritime security.

Navy spokesman, Commodore Suleman Dahun, in a statement, said history was made in Les Sables d’Olonne France with the launching of the first-ever purpose-built hydrographic survey vessel by the Nigerian Navy.

Dahun said at the ceremony at the OCEA shipyard, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, represented by Rear Admiral Abraham Adaji, explained that the new vessel was conceived as a replacement for the Nigerian Navy survey vessel, NNS LANA which was decommissioned about ten years ago.

He said the CNS noted that obtaining the vessel was of great significance as it marked a giant stride in the efforts towards actualizing the dreams of not only restoring but enhancing the Nigerian Navy’s survey capability.
