‘Marathon race will reduce restiveness and insecurity in Kaduna State’

Tom Boniface, a national athletics technical official, says the upcoming maiden Kaduna International Marathon Race can help to restore peace and reduce insecurity in the state.

Boniface told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that the event would also reduce youth restiveness within the state.

“Talking about insecurity, the whole world is aware of what’s happening in Kaduna State today.

“I want to believe that organising this marathon will bring about the much-needed peace in the state.

“I want to also believe that youth restiveness in Kaduna State will reduce or be eliminated through the marathon which will bring together a lot of youths who will participate in this marathon,” he said.

On the possibility of having about 10,000 participants at the event, Boniface said he was sure sports officials would put in place appropriate measures to adhere to COVID-19 protocols.

“The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 is doing a great job and I believe the organisers of this competition will surely adhere strictly to all the measures being taken to curbs the effects of the pandemic.

“It also clear that the facilities to kickstart this marathon will never be a challenge to the government of Kaduna State,” Boniface said.

He said there would be excitement among Nigerians as the race would attract some foreigners into the country and their presence would boost the country’s economy.

“There will be foreign currency exchange and the hotel business will boom, while food vendors and petty traders will make brisk business. Even cultural dancers will be encouraged to display their talents.’’

Boniface also pointed out that the fact that Gov. Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State had indicated strong interest to participate in the event, saying this was a good development. (NAN)
