Many killed, 7 towns razed as Tiv/Ichen crisis worsen in Taraba

The crisis between Tiv and Ichen tribes in Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State escalated on Tuesday.

Daily Trust gathered that many people were feared killed and no fewer than seven towns were burnt down completely.

The towns destroyed included Anano and Suntai Daji.

Daily Trust gathered that militia men have taken over the entire area, forcing thousands of people including women and children to flee.

A source in the area, Dauda Danazumi, told Daily Trust in a telephone interview that militia groups, armed with sophisticated weapons, were attacking Ichen and Tiv towns and villages.

He said thousands of refugees have crossed to part of Kurmi, Bali, Gassol and Takum local government areas.

The source said it is difficult to give exact number of those killed, adding that many people have been killed.

When contacted, police spokesperson, DSP David Misal, confirmed fresh attacks and burning of Suntai Daji, Anano and other villages.

He said it is difficult to know the exact casualty figure for now, adding that more policemen have been dispatched to the troubled areas.
