Manpower: One officer doing job of two policemen, IGP laments

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has lamented the shortage of manpower in the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), saying a policeman does the job of two.

Egbetokun said this in Ilọrin Friday during a one-day official visit to the Kwara State command.

“A policeman would close from night duty and resume for the morning. And as he is closing from the morning shift he is resuming night duty. yet when he dozes off in public his photograph is taken and posted on social media to ridicule him,” he said.

He, however, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the increment in the number of personnel being recruited into the force yearly as part of the ways to address the shortage of manpower.

“We are making efforts to increase your strength. The president had recently given approval for an increase in the yearly recruitment of police.

“That’s the way forward. We need to double the strength of the police in the country. We cannot do it overnight but gradually. And gradually, we will get there,” he said.

The IGP cautioned officers calling for the removal of police officers from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

“The issue of pension has been a source of concern to all of you but we have plans and programmes to improve it,” he said.

Earlier in his remark, the state commissioner of police, Victor Olaiya, requested the supply of an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) from the IGP to further enhance security of banks and improve crime fighting capacity in the state.
