Pep Guardiola will resist any approaches for John Stones this summer with the England centre-half still part of the Manchester City manager’s plans.

Stones, 23, was outstanding for City during the opening months of the season but his campaign since has been dogged by a series of injury problems and indifferent form.

City lost the only two games Stones has started since late January, against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup and Basel in the Champions League, and he has slipped to the bottom of the central defensive pecking order behind captain Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi and January signing Aymeric Laporte.

A hamstring tear against Leicester City in mid-November ruled Stones out for over six weeks and his form faltered upon his return to the side in early January, although the defender still appeared to be affected by the injury.

He then suffered a concussion during England’s friendly against Italy in late March and has since been struck down by an adductor problem, the combination of which has kept him out for the past month.

Nonetheless, Guardiola is thought to still consider Stones an important member of his squad, despite suggestions he could be sold in the summer, and the player – who has more than four years to run on his contract – is known to have little interest in leaving the Premier League champions.

Guardiola said Stones’ condition was improving on Sunday and expressed hope that the player would feature for City before the end of the season.
