The Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta, has sentenced a 39-year-old man, Musiliu Owolabi, to death by hanging for killing his lover, Afusat Idowu.
Owolabi, who is an automobile mechanic, was convicted on a one-count charge of murder on November 12, 2019, and he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting counsel, James Mafe, said the convict committed the offence on February 1, 2018, at Camp Area, Abeokuta.
Mafe said the convict took Afusat to a hotel ‘‘for pleasure and after a while she complained of stomach ache and later started foaming from her mouth’’.
He told the court that, “The convict took her in his vehicle and on the way noticed that she was dead and then he secretly took the corpse to an uncompleted building, dug a shallow grave and buried her.
“The convict was arrested when the younger brother of the deceased went to the police to complain that his sister who told him she was going for a naming ceremony at Bode Olude area never returned.
“Upon police investigation and tracking the deceased’s phone, it was discovered that the convict was the last person that spoke with her.
“Upon his arrest, he made a confessional statement to the police and took them where he buried his lover.”
The Chief Judge of Ogun State, Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu, convicted Owolabi, said the prosecution proved his case beyond reasonable doubt and that Owolabi was guilty of the offence.
Justice Dipeolu said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 319 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006 and held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging.
