If ever Auwal Bala had a premonition of death last Monday, certain euphoria had belied the feeling on the fateful day the cold hand of death swooped on him. His friends said that he was in an euphoric mood because he was told that his diploma result would be ready the next day.

Auwal Bala, a madrasah teacher, had just studied Islamic jurisprudence at Aminu College of Legal Studies, Kano, and, according to his friends, hoped to secure admission into the university for further studies.

What suddenly cast blight on his ecstatic day was a disagreement he had later that evening with a ‘notorious teenager.’ According to the people of the area, Anas Aliyu, alias Danzaki Takashi-kayanka (whoever dares a cub meets the death) carried a knife on him wherever he went.

Such was what happened to the 22-year-old Auwal Bala when he gave Aliyu N1000 as advance payment of Motorola V3 repair. Sources, on whose presence the deal was struck, said that the late Bala gave Aliyu N1000 advance for repairs of his handset (Aliyu repairs handsets)  so that when it is finally repaired they would decide on the price.

Day after day, Aliyu neither brought the handset nor settle the advance payment. “Almost every day he asked for his money, Danzaki [Aliyu] would renege on the promise,” one of the deceased friends, Ibrahim Ado Kankiya, told our reporter.

Kankiya revealed that Aliyu promised the deceased that he would pay him the money unfailingly on that fateful Monday, saying that it was Aliyu’s failure to pay the money and the invectives he showered on him that provoked him to kill the young man. “Malam, I wouldn’t pay the money–do your worse,” he was said to have replied late Bala conceitedly.

According to Kankiya, the altercation began when Ali told Bala that he would kill him if he dared ask him about the money again.

As the brawl ensued, those around them tried to mediate, but before they could separate them they saw Ali slump, bleeding profusely in the neck.

It was 9:15pm and only a few onlookers were at the scene. The people asked Ali to handover the knife but he refused, saying he did not stab Bala. Sensing that he was lying, bystanders, therefore, began to comb the area.

Lying at the edge of a drainage was the gory knife that slew Bala – who was still lying in the pool of his blood. The onlookers remained at a fix, not knowing the next line of action to take. While some people held Ali for the arrival of the police, others rushed to a nearby police outpost.

Bala was still bleeding when the Police at the Gidan Zoo outpost arrived at the scene. On arrival, they asked for the suspect but they were told that a group of his friends had just set him free. According to the eyewitness, the policeman that came to the scene then said he would not accompany them to the hospital unless the suspect was produced.

They then decided to rush to another police station. There the police agreed to accompany them to the hospital, as the young man continued to bleed profusely.

An eyewitness told our reporter that when they reached a public hospital (name withheld), they were told that they should provide some money before the late Bala could be admitted.

It was close to 11pm when they returned to the hospital, only to be told by the medical personnel that their patient had died.

Confirming the incident to Sunday Trust yesterday, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tanko Lawan, said the suspect had already been arrested by the police. He added that Ali was transferred from the divisional police station, where he was held initially, to the CID.

DCP Lawan then said the suspect would be prosecuted upon conclusion of the investigation.
