Man remanded for raping 63-year-old mentally challenged woman

A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ogba, Lagos State has ordered the remand of a 35-year-old man, Gani Faremi, for allegedly having canal knowledge of a 63-year old mentally challenged woman.

The accused who was charged with rape and unlawful conduct was alleged to have lured the woman to a corner on Bolade Street, Oshodi area of Lagos, where he committed the act.

The police said the accused was caught in the act by some passers-by who raised the alarm that led to his arrest. Consequent upon his arrest by passers-by, he was subsequently handed over to the police.

The case was later transferred to the Gender Section of the State Police Command, in Ikeja where he was further interrogated to ascertain the motive behind his action.

According to the police, the accused allegedly admitted committing the act and upon his admittance of guilt, he was charged to court on the directive of the state police boss.

When he was arraigned, the court did not take his plea after the prosecutor, Supol Bisi Ogunleye, asked the court to refer the matter to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. E. Kubeinje, ordered his remand in the correctional centre at Kirikiri, Lagos, pending the outcome of the DPP’s report.

The court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP while the matter was adjourned till February 15, 2022.
