A man shot dead his girlfriend, 24-year-old Onyinyechi Okegbulam of Egbu in Owerri- North Local Government Area of Imo State, for allegedly rejecting his marriage proposal.
A source who spoke to Daily Trust said the woman was shot in the head at close range.
Another source claimed that after shooting the girl, the young man attempted to smuggle the body into his car, but scampered for safety when a woman raised alarm. A resident of the area said, “we heard that the man has been paying for her education, but that she abandoned him and openly opted to marry another man. We even heard that the marriage date had been fixed before this incident occurred”.
The deceased, Oyinyechi, was until her death, a final year HND student of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede.
The body of the deceased is said to have been deposited at the Aladinma mortuary in Owerri Municipal Council.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident.
He said the command received report of the incident. He added that the suspect is at large but that efforts are on to apprehend him.
