A mob descended on a young man, identified as Shehu, after he allegedly stole a woman’s handbag in the Kwaita village market in Kwali Area Council of the FCT.
A witness, Halidu Musa, said the incident happened around 11am on Wednesday when a woman, identified as Mary, came to the market to buy foodstuff.
He said the woman was busy buying grains when the suspect, who pretended to be a customer, picked her handbag and tried to escape.
He further said, “As he was about to escape, a mob apprehended and started beating him until vigilantes who got wind of the incident arrived the scene and rescued him.

A vigilante, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the quick intervention of the vigilantes saved the suspect from being lynched and handed him over to the police.
There was no response from the spokeswoman of the FCT Police Command, SP Adeh Josephine, on the incident.
