Man docked over alleged stabbing of brother

A 28-year-old man, Leonard Anukum, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Karu Grade I Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stabbing his elder brother and threatening other family members.

Anukum, who resides in Karu, Abuja, is standing trial on a six-count charge bordering on criminal intimidation, force, causing grievous hurt, inciting disturbance of public peace and membership of unlawful assembly.

The prosecutor, Vincent Osuji, told the court that one Ekechi Kingsley of same address with the defendant, reported the case at the Karu Police Station, Abuja, on Sept. 21, around 900:a.m.

“The complainant alleged that on same date, the defendant, who is also his younger brother came into his room and stabbed him with a cutlass, during an argument between them.
“In the process, he inflicted serious injury on the complainant’s hand and he was rushed to the hospital where he is still receiving treatment.

“The complainant stated further that the defendant threatened to kill him, and other family members and innocent public members who came to intervene in the issue.

“The defendant also claimed to be a cultist and will also terminate the life of anybody that stands in his way,” Osuji said.

The prosecutor also told the court that during police investigation, it was discovered that the defendant’s actions have been causing chaos, fear to the family and other members of the public.

He said that the defendant had been severally arrested and charged to court for similar offences and also warned to desist from the act, but he refused.

The offences contravened the provisions of Sections 397(b), 265(b), 248, 114, 113 and 102(c) of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge, Malam Sani Mohammed, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000 with three sureties in like sum.

He said two of the sureties must be members of his family and adjourned the case until Oct. 30, for hearing.
