A 22-year-old man in Oke-Gada area in Ede, Osun State, Toluwalope Oladoye, has been arrested by police for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl.
He was detained at the divisional police headquarters in Ede and the case was later transferred to the Vulnerable Persons and Gender Unit at the Police Command in Osogbo, the state capital.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, said the case is under investigation.
Meanwhile, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with a non-governmental organization, Action Health Incorporated (AHI), is intensifying campaign in the state to strengthen legal responses to Gender Based Violence.
During a training organised by UNFPA and AHI for lawyers and law enforcement agents in the state on Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, the UNFPA Gender/FGM Analyst Uzoma Ayodeji said the training was to strengthen their capacity in handling cases of violence against women and girls, including Female Genital Mutilation, saying that VAPP law would make their their job easier.
The AHI Program Officer, Arinola Alabi said the training was aimed at popularizating the VAPP law among the duty bearers to so as to curb Gender Based Violence in the state.
Alabi said “It is imperative to sensitize law enforcement agents and lawyers on legal protection of people’s rights and the need to provide sanctions against violence and disincentives for perpetrators. Lawyers and law enforcement agents were sensitized so they can develop necessary minimum will-power to enforce the law.”
