Man ‘beats’, rapes woman in Ogun

the suspect was arrested following a report lodged by the victim at Sakora Divisional Police

The police in Ogun State have arrested a 33-year-old man, Imoleayo Adekoya, for allegedly beating and raping a 27-year-old woman (name withheld).

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who disclosed this to journalists on Sunday, said the suspect was arrested on Saturday, August 28 in the Sagamu area of the state.

According to Oyeyemi, the suspect was arrested following a report lodged by the victim at Sakora Divisional Police headquarters in Sagamu.

The PPRO said the victim told the police that she was accosted by the suspect while she was coming from the Ipoji area of the town.

The victim explained that the suspect accused her of not greeting him, pounced on her and started beating her.

She added that the man then dragged her to the back of his house where her clothes were torn before having sex with her despite shouting and struggling.

“Upon the report, the DPO of Sakora Division, CSP Rowland Dahunsi, detailed his detectives to follow the victim who was accompanied to the station by her father, to the scene where the suspect who was identified by the victim and was promptly arrested with the assistance of the people around.

“On interrogation, the suspect confessed to committing the crime, but claimed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time,” the PPRO said.

He added that the victim had been taken to hospital for treatment while the police awaited the report of the medical examination.

Oyeyemi quoted the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, to have ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to state criminal investigation and intelligence department for further investigation and prosecution.
