Man beaten for stealing fish in FCT

A man, identified simply as Joshua, was on Wednesday manhandled by a mob over allegedly stealing one iced fish in the Gwagwalada Main Market in Gwagwalada Area Council of the FCT.

A fishmonger in the market, Mrs Margaret Azuka, said the suspect picked a fish and started pricing, but that while the fish monger was attending to other customers, he put the fish in a cellophane bag.

She said that, before then, “The woman selling the fish told the man that a medium size of Titus fish was N1,500 while the man, holding the fish, insisted that he would pay N800.”

She further said that the woman discovered that the suspect who did not drop the fish, left and was about to take an Okada when the woman raised the alarm.

She said a mob seized the polythene bag from the suspect after he claimed to have dropped the fish and that the fish was found inside.

She said, “After seeing the fish inside the bag, boys pounced on him and started beating him. Some customers intervened before vigilantes came and whisked him away.”

The spokeswoman of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, could not be reached for comment on the incident, but a policeman in the area confirmed the incident.
