Jafaru Ahmed Gwarzo (Sarkin Tsaftar Kano) the head of the Unit, told Pyramid Trust that Malami was initially asked to surrender the consignment for destruction but he refused and went ahead to sell 370 cartons out of 500 in the container. He said this prompted the unit to arraign him before the court.

Magistrate Abdullahi Muhammad Dawakiji of Court 25 Noman’s land found Malami guilty of contravention of Section 14 Subsection 1, 2 & 3 of the Kano State Public Health Edict of 1985 and sentenced the accused to 12 months behind bars with an option of N50,000.00 fine. The Magistrate also ordered for the destruction of the impounded products under the supervision of the media and health officials.

The arrest, according to Gwarzo, was the thirteenth since the agency stepped up efforts to rid the state of products that are unfit for human consumption. One carton of the rotten fish is sold to the public at N3,000.00, Gwarzo added.
