The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Wasiu Afolabi, over alleged extortion of his parents, family members and friends after he reportedly demanded a N3 million ransom for a fake abduction.
The spokeswoman of the command, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, who disclosed this in a statement, said the suspect committed the crime in connivance with his elder brother, Lekan Afolabi, and a POS agent, Moshood Sulaiman.
The statement reads in part: “On March 17th, 2024, a worrisome case of self-kidnapping was reported when Lekan Afolabi from Amayo town reported that his 24-year-old younger brother, Wasiu Afolabi, was allegedly abducted. Following a ransom demand of N3 million and after a series of negotiations with the kidnappers, they agreed to accept N500,000 with an initial installment of N200,000.
“However, investigation by the command led to the arrest of the suspect. It was discovered that the suspect orchestrated his own kidnapping to extort money for personal use.
