Man arrested for chaining wife in Yobe

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Yobe State, on Wednesday, arrested a man at Stadium Quarters in Potiskum LGA for allegedly chaining his wife on her feet.

The suspect was arrested after Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) reported the matter to the DPO of Potiskum.

City & Crime gathered that the man claimed he chained his wife due to her mental illness and to stop her from begging people to support her with food or money.

When contacted, NSCDC spokesperson in the state, Bala Garba, said the chain on the wife’s feet had been removed, while medical doctors were working on her, adding that the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) would be contacted to handle the issue.

City & Crime further learnt that a prominent human rights defender, Fauziyya D. Suleiman, posted on her Facebook page that the man had chained, tortured and locked up his wife and prevented anyone from entering their house.
