A yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man is being detained by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for allegedly attempting to smuggle Indian hemp valued at N1.68 million into Nigeria.

The suspect was arrested at the Gbaji area of Badagry by NCS operatives attached to the Seme Area Command.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was said to be driving a metallic red-coloured Toyota Highlander vehicle.

The Customs Area Controller, Seme Area Command, Mohammed Una Garba, who disclosed this on Monday, alleged that the suspect concealed the illicit substance in the spare tyre of his car.

Garba, who expressed worry over what he called “the die-hard attitude of criminals”, said, “The illicit substance, 114 parcels of it, was found concealed in one red Toyota Highlander jeep, while another 32 parcels in another operation were intercepted. The street value of both seizures is N1.681m.

“Both the suspect and the item would be handed over to officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.”

He added that the intensified operation of the Enforcement Unit had drastically reduced smuggling activities to the barest minimum.
