Man accused of defaming former IGP granted bail

Garzali Musa Muhammad, who was accused of defaming character of the former Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim K. Idris has been granted bail.

Muhammad alias Obansajon-NNDC was arraigned before a Kano Magistrate court on two-count charge of defamation of character and injurious falsehood contrary to Sections 392, 393 of the Penal Code Law.

The Prosecutor, Jacob Yaduma told the court that Obasanjon-NNDC of Sharada quarters intended to defame the character, reputation, and harm the former IGP Ibrahim on the 17th January 2019.

The court heard that the accused was aired on a Kano based private FM
radio station, Freedom radio spreading false statements, calling the former IGP corrupt, thief and dismissed police officer, knowing fully that the statements were false and injurious.

The accused pleaded not guilty when the charge sheet was read to him.
The presiding judge, the Chief Magistrate, Mukhtar Dandago adjourned the case to 31st January 2019.
