Malcomines, Police, Army, others win big at Bauchi polo tourney

The just concluded 2024 Bauchi annual polo international tournament produced proud champions with Jos Malcomines, the Police, Army and Bauchi Mujaddadii sharing top honours.

It will be recalled that the well attended tournament galloped off with fanfare on July 22 and came to a climax on July 27.

Defending champions, Jos Malcomines edged former champions, Bauchi Dokaji to win the event’s biggest prize, Governor Cup, their fifth straight victory.

They also added the newly inaugurated Mujaddadi Cup to their haul in a show of supremacy.

The biggest roar of the tournament came from the Nigerian Police team and the Nigeria Army team respectively just as the home fans celebrated Bauchi Mujaddadi for winning the Emir of Bauchi Cup.

The IGP of Police team led by the Nigeria Police Polo Association (NPPA) helmsman, CSP Usman Machika, fired past four tough oppositions to clinch the highly revered Tafawa Balewa Cup.

The Police polo boss who lauded his teammates for their commitment and discipline throughout the tournament, highlighted the importance of bringing youths in the noble game and lauded Bauchi Polo Club for hosting another successful tournament.

In neighbouring Jos there was celebration galore at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment Jos as 3 Division Polo team emerged winner, carting home the glittering Kuyambana Wase Cup.

The 3 Division Jos Polo team led by Col. Y Bello and the Acting Assistant Director 3 Division Legal Service Major Aminu Mairuwa, overwhelmed their opponents 4- 0 in a fierce encounter.

Other top winners of the polo fiesta include the Kano Gilasso team that narrowly edged their opponents from Bauchi 41/2-4 to win the Sarkin Fulani Cup.

Meanwhile, Hadiza MA led her team to win the Beginners Cup.

The Governor of Bauchi state, Senator Bala Mohammed, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the grand finale congratulated the winners of various trophies and all the participants.

The Governor who spoke through the Commissioner of Sports, Mr Salisu Gamawa reiterated the state government’s commitment towards developing sports in the state.

In their closing remarks, Vice President of Bauchi Polo Club, Gen I.I Adamu alongside the Vice President, Aliyu Sambo and Secretary Hasruna Ningi all expressed delight with the state government and other sponsors, for their loyalty to the sport of kings.
