Maiduguri flood, a national problem – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on the people of Borno State to view the recent flood disaster as a national issue, not just a local one.

He stated this during his visit to Borno on Monday, where he expressed his sympathy for the devastating floods that nearly submerged Maiduguri, the state capital.

“This is a disaster we must all take seriously. We, as a government, will assist Borno State in rehabilitation and addressing other challenges. It is not just Borno’s problem; it’s Nigeria’s problem. We must extend support to all affected areas,” Tinubu said.

The president said despite being en route to the United States, he felt it necessary to visit Maiduguri and stand in solidarity with the flood survivors.

“Shehu, I understand your palace has been flooded, and the vice president briefed me on the situation.

“Even though I was headed directly to America, I had to come here, if only for a brief moment, to show my support. I thank you for your leadership during this time,” Tinubu said.

He assured the people that his administration is committed to addressing environmental challenges and tackling climate change.

The president also acknowledged the presence of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who belongs to a different political party, as a sign of unity.

“Your Excellency, Governor Mohammed, I appreciate the dedication and love shown here, regardless of political differences. This is the spirit we need as Nigerians.

“Our diversity should be a source of stability and prosperity, fostering faith in each other and humanity,” Tinubu remarked.

He offered prayers for those who lost their lives in the tragedy and asked for an end to such calamities.

Borno State governor, Prof Babagana Umara Zulum appealed to the president to deploy experts with new hydraulic structures that can handle the natural water flow.

Meanwhile, the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged the federal government to identify and make public a list of flood-prone areas to enhance citizen safety and preparedness.

In a statement by JNI Secretary-General, Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, the organisation stressed the importance of proactive flood management measures, including early warning systems and strengthening of dams, especially those that pose severe risks to lives and properties.
