A High Court sitting in Edo State has sentenced a maid, Dominion Okoro, to death by hanging for killing Mrs Maria Oredola Igbinedion, mother of a former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion.

The Dominion was charged to court by the police alongside her elder sister, Patience Okoro, in December, 2021.

The prosecutor told the court that Dominion killed Mrs Igbinedion, her employer, with a stool with the intent to steal her N100,000 on December 1, 2021, at her residence in Ugbor area of Benin.

Delivering judgement, Justice Efe Ikponmwoba held that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said after hitting Mrs Igbinedion with a stool, Dominion used cotton wool to stoke her nose and thereafter called a taxi to escape from the house the following morning.

The court also held that the evidence of the pathologist on the cause of her death, evidences of other prosecution witnesses, in addition to the convict’s confessional statement, it was safe for the court to send the Dominion to the gallows.

On her accomplice, Patience, the court held that the only evidence linking her with the case was that Dominion called her to inform her after committing the crime.

The judge, therefore, discharged and acquitted Patience of the charge of accessory after murder.
