Magistrate slams N50,000 fine on man videoing court proceedings

A magistrates’ court sitting in Ojo, Lagos State, on Monday, slammed a N50,000 fine on a man who was arrested for video recording court proceedings on his smart phone.

The accused, Yusuf Akeem, was dragged before the court by the police after he was seen video recording the cases being attended to by the magistrate.

The accused, who pleaded guilty, however, said he did not know that it was an offense to make videos of matters being attended to in court.

The prosecutor, Ekpo Edet, who played the video for the magistrate to see, asked the court for a date to enable him establish the fact that the accused actually committed the alleged offence.

The magistrate, Mr T. A. Popoola, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case to May 8, 2022.
