Police in Kaduna State have arrested a woman and her lover for allegedly stealing a six-week-old infant in the Kujama area of Chikun Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Basira Hussaini and her boyfriend, Sebio Samuel, were apprehended nine days after the infant was taken.
Basira, who is a friend of the infant’s grandmother, confessed to taking the child during a visit to the grandmother’s house.
She claimed her motive was not to harm the baby but to deceive her boyfriend into believing the infant was his, as they had been struggling to have a child together.

“I didn’t take the child to harm him; I only wanted to make my boyfriend believe the baby was his because we couldn’t have one together,” Basira explained.
Basira said during the nine days the infant was with them, she attempted to breastfeed the child despite not producing milk, while her boyfriend provided money to buy milk for the baby, though he was skeptical about the child’s paternity.
Sebio Samuel pleaded for leniency, admitting that he suspected Basira was lying about the child’s parentage since he had never seen her pregnant.
The Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident, stating that both suspects are in custody and will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.
