The managing director of Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA), Engr. Bassey Edet Nkposong, has said that his inability to immediately raise N15 million on Saturday led to the wanton looting of all the offices and guest houses, destruction and burning of 34 vehicles and factories in the entire basin town.
Showing journalists round the headquarters of the authority, Nkposong said the hooligans were not looters but mercenaries imported into the town to particularly attack the town.
- Looting: ‘House-to-house search illegal without court order’
- Looting: Osun govt returns recovered items to owners
He said the leader of the army of mercenaries told him “Give us N15 million if you want us to spare CRBDA. Nothing more or less.”
Nkposong said he tried to negotiate and even promised N5 million but their leader rejected it.
He alleged that some staff may have lent support or connived with the hoodlums and that ongoing investigations will fish many out.
