The Federal government of Nigeria announced a total lockdown on the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun States on March 30th, 2020.

These lockdown lasted for a month with only essential workers and services in operation.

On Monday, the federal government eased weeks of lockdown imposed on the states.

However, with the increasing number of Covid19 cases in the country, the easing of the lockdown to some is “freedom”, and while to others, it is a “call to more wreck”

Daily Trust spoke to residents on the easing of the lockdown and the precautionary measures they are taking to keep safe now that they are out.

“Ah! Freedom at last! I was so happy and even in the first place I don’t believe in this virus, the government is just keeping us indoors jare”, says Dennis Theophilus, a cab driver who is happy to resume his business after the lockdown.

“The rise in COVID-19 cases is alarming, this can be seen at the end part of the total lock down. Those who have had the virus have been able to stay at home, test themselves and realize they are positive. But with the ease of the lockdown, there is every probability that the figures will skyrocket because those that have been staying safe will inevitably have contact with the COVID-19 patients,” says Musa Kabiru, an administrator.

When Daily Trust’s correspondent approached Nkiru Nnamdi’s stall at the Karmo Market in Abuja while maintaining social distancing, she said “I keep thinking about what will happen in the next 21 days when the repercussions of this ease of lockdown will begin to manifest. Those who don’t know their status mix up with other people from the point of entering public transport to exchanging currencies, this will in itself lead to more transmission of the virus”

“Keeping safe now that the lockdown has been eased will be like a camel passing through the eye of a needle. Despite the fact that I am mobile, I’m still skeptical about certain things such as the handle to the door of my vehicle, as I wouldn’t know who have touched while my car is parked,” added Ajayi Rukayat.

It was observed that some residents of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, are not conscious of maintaining social distancing and putting precautionary measures in place.
