The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has vowed to go tough on transporters who defile the lockdown restriction order by embarking on night journeys.

The Force spokesman, Frank Mba, in a statement yesterday, said intelligence report had shown that members of the organized transport sector had continued to breach the existing restriction order by resorting to night travels.

He said this had proven to be counter-productive as it undermined the tireless efforts of the Federal Government in curbing the spread of COVID-19.

The IGP, Mba said, had directed Commissioners of Police to ensure full implementation of the restriction order, “especially as it relates to night travel without being unmindful of categories of exempted persons and the fundamental human rights of Nigerians.”

He restated that the lockdown was for 24 hours daily and night hours were not excluded.

The IGP urged the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, the Public Transport Owners of Nigeria Association and others to warn their members to strictly adhere to the restriction order as violators “will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
