Lobi Stars accept NFF’s decision on league cancellation

  • … NWFL set aside, not cancelled – Falode

2018 Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Lobi Stars have accepted the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to end the 2019/2020 football season.

It will be recalled that the NFF during a virtual meeting held last week Friday adopted the voting opinion of the club owners to end the season and declare Plateau United as champions.

In a statement signed by the club’s Executive Vice Chairman, Mike Idoko, Lobi Stars acknowledged they were opposed to the application of the Points Per Game (PPG) to end the league but had to succumb to the wishes of the club owners who were in the majority.

“As a club, we had opposed the application of the PPG as it stood as an obstacle to our dreams of being in the continent next year, but no matter how rational our opinion is cannot pass the test of time if the majority of the stakeholders hold a contrary opinion, wrongly or rightly.

“We hereby accept the final decision of the NFF without ill feelings and wish all the clubs that emerged as continental representatives 2020/2021 best of luck and God’s guidance to do well in their respective CAF inter-club championships,” he said.

He went on to say the club will always be in the forefront of supporting the growth of Nigerian football while declaring the end result as a case of no victor, no vanquish.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Mrs Aisha Falode, has debunked media reports that the 2019/20 season of the women domestic league has been cancelled.

She explained that the NWFL for 2019/20 season was never held as the league had not begun before COVID-19 pandemic grounded all sporting activities in Nigeria.

“This season’s NWFL was not cancelled. How can we cancel something which has not been held?” she asked rhetorically.

She, however, disclosed that some games will still be played this year as soon as the pandemic ceases, to allow for the emergence of the nation’s flag bearers for the maiden edition of the newly introduced women’s version of the CAF Champions League, which will commence next year.
