Liberalise electricity meters’ prices, manufacturers tell FG

The Association of Meter Manufacturers of Nigeria (AMMON) has stated that the country will experience shortage in the availability of electricity meters if the federal government fails to liberalise its prices and stabilise the naira.

In a statement yesterday, AMMON said, “If urgent action is not taken, AMMON warns that there will be a critical shortage of meters available for installation within the next 14 days.”

It noted that the impact of delayed intervention could exacerbate the existing challenges faced by the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) and hinder progress towards achieving widespread access to electricity meters.

The association, while calling on the government to put in place measures required to tackle the foreign exchange crisis and inflation in the country, said ending fixed prices on meter purchase would ensure a steady supply of meters.

It appreciated the recent establishment of the Presidential Committee on Mass Metering under the leadership of the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, describing it as a bold step towards addressing the pressing challenges in the metering sector.

It also advocated collaboration between regulatory bodies and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to develop cost-effective meter specifications tailored to NESI requirements, saying by working closely with NEMSA, the association believed that it could contribute to the development of standards that promoted affordability without compromising quality and reliability.
