The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has accused the Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, and his Ondo counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, of plotting to frustrate the passage of the Local Government Autonomy Bill.

The union called on President Muhammadu Buhari to caution the duo and asked the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to prevail on its governors so as not to jeopardise its chances in the forthcoming general elections with their recent moves.

At a press conference in Abuja yesterday, the president of NULGE, Ambali Olatunji, said the perpetual crippling of the local government system was tantamount to continuity of banditry, insurgency, ethnic agitations and other criminalities in the country.

Olatunji said the position of the governors was “unpatriotic, self-serving and anti-people.”

He commended Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike; his Jigawa counterpart, Abubakar Badaru, and some others for openly supporting local government autonomy.

Daily Trust further reports that the National Assembly recently approved proposed amendments to the 1999 constitution to grant financial autonomy to the state legislature, judiciary and the 774 local government areas in the country.
