With about 18 million passengers annually, Nigeria’s aviation sector is underperforming, the Director General, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Musa Nuhu, has said.

He said with about 200 million population, Nigerian aviation traffic should be a lot more higher and should be contributing more than 1.3 percent to the Gross Domestic Product.

The Director General of the NCAA Capt. Musa Nuhu stated this in Abuja on the sidelines of the Fourteenth International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Air Services Negotiation event, (ICAN 2022) in Abuja.

“Imagine the economic impact if we can raise the about 18 million current passenger traffic to 30 or 35 million. This will be a significant increase in the jobs that we create” he stated.

He said stakeholders collaboration will lead to increase passengers’ traffic.

“We can achieve this when we work together. The various sectors of the industry and non-industry sectors whose actions and decisions impact our sector if we work together, we can make aviation a catalyst for economic growth” he stated.

On improved aviation regulation going forward, Capt. Nuhu said “the president signed the reviewed Civil Aviation Act. Currently the minister of Aviation is collating reports from the various sectors of the industry which will be used to develop a robust civil aviation policy for the industry.”

“Based on that the NCAA will call for a review by stakeholders and establish new sets of civil aviation regulations that will reflect current realities of civil aviation regulation” he stated.
