Parents of the detained director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, have called on the federal government and the Department of Security Services (DSS) to free him.
Addressing journalists in their home yesterday, the 83-year-old traditional ruler of Afaraukwu Ibeku autonomous community in Umuahia North council area, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, claimed the arrest and continued incarceration of his first son have aggravated his health condition. Eze Kanu said that he hardly sleeps since Nnamdi was arrested.
The arrest of Kanu has triggered series of pro- Biafran protests across the South East and South South states of the country.
The traditional ruler, who denied knowledge of his son’s involvement in the pro-Biafra agitation, appealed to President Mohammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter and secure the release of Kanu, who he maintained “is not a trouble maker.”
The traditional ruler pointed out that “people are bound to differ even in a family, much less in a democracy where freedom of speech is guaranteed.”
Saying his son was mature enough to speak his mind, he declared, “I know that in Nigeria where there is freedom of speech, people have the right to disagree.”
