Leave legacy of credible polls, group urges Buhari

A non-governmental organisation, Sustainable Initiatives for Nurturing Growth (SING), has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to leave a legacy of credible polls by assenting to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Addressing a press conference at the weekend, the executive director of the organisation, Mr Idris-Etanami Usman, said signing the bill into law would check malpractices in elections and ensure credible polls.

“We are faced with the monster of vote-buying and selling, which is an anathema to voting itself. This desperation by politicians to always beguile the citizens to sell their votes should be discouraged and resisted henceforth.

Usman argued that the nation was in dire need of issue-based political campaigns as its electoral environment is characterized by money politics.

He called on relevant stakeholders to discourage any attempt to scuttle the will of the people through “illicit use of money” in the form of vote-buying which, he said, would further weaken democratic practice among others.
