Lawmakers reject LG councils’ tenure extension

Seven members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have rejected the tenure extension of local government chairmen by the assembly.

They are the Chief Whip, Abdullahi Mohammed Dansadau, Dep. Chief Whip, Mallam Mani Mallam Mumuni, Salisu Musa Tsafe, Dayyabu Adamu Rijiya, Munsur Ahmed Musa Bungudu, Hashimu M. Shehu Gazura and AbubakarAjiya Nasarawa.

Speaking at a press conference on behalf of others, Tsafe said the extension of the tenure of the elected councils was unwarranted and without justification as there was no compelling cause for not conducting or holding local government elections to replace the expired councils.

The tenure extension was sequel to a purported approval or confirmation by the House of Assembly granted in an emergency session of the assembly held on January 2, 2019, to a request by Gov. Abdulaziz Yari.

The lawmakers asked Gov. Yari to, in the interim, forward a proposal and names of sole administrators/caretaker committees to the House forapproval/confirmation to replace the 14 expired councils.
