A member representing Dukku/Nafada Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hajiya Aishatu Jibril Dukku, has planted trees to curtail erosion and desertification in her constituency.
Begining the exercise at the Pakkar-Gombe Abba village of Dukku Local Government Area of Gombe State, Aishatu said the tree planting campaign was aimed at curbing the menace of erosion and desert encroachment bedeviling communities in her constituency.
“The need to conserve our lands through planting of trees in our community has become more important now than ever due to widespread erosion and desert encroachment,” she said.
More than 2,000 seedlings of cashew, mango, guava and date trees were planted, with the legislator promising to distribute another 250, 000 seedlings to the constituency every year.
In his remark, Mr Obinna Chidoka, the chairman of the house committee on environment and habitat, said tree-planting was important to prevent desert encroachment.
While urging people to get involved in solving environmental challenges, Chidoka said that government alone cannot tackle the numerous environmental challenges.
