LASU introduces 50% rebate for students with 4.50 CGPA

Lagos State University (LASU) has introduced a policy that guarantees 50percent refund of school fees to the university scholars, that is, students who consistently maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 every academic session.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, disclosed this on Monday at the 2020/2021 matriculation ceremony of 6,648 students newly admitted to study various Degree programmes at the university.

It is the first matriculation ceremony that Professor Olatunji-Bello will conduct as the 9th substantive vice chancellor of LASU.

According to her, the policy seeks to help the welfare of the students as well as to promote healthy competition among them. “It is a policy introduced to help the welfare of the students and to promote healthy competition among them.

“The university would take the bill, which is a refund of 50percent of their school fees.
This is not new, when I was the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, we had the policy of 4.0 CGPA as scholars, which refunded their full school fees of N25,000 at that time but now, with the current N57,000 school fees, the policy would refund 50percent of the school fees to those who obtain 4.50 CGPA and above at the end of the academic session,” she explained.

Commenting on students’ employment policy, the newly appointed VC disclosed plan to establish micro factories within the universities where students can work to get monthly stipends. This, according to her is to aid students’ welfare.

While she described the university as the second best university in Nigeria as rated by Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings; she made known her vision to move the university to a more enviable height of being the best university in West Africa by 2025 when her tenure is expected to come to an end. “We are committed to the cause and are determined to emerge the Best University in the West Africa Region,” she reiterated.

The VC encouraged the matriculating students to strive for academic excellence in all they do; urging them to shun deviant behaviors, avoid indecent dressing and other vices that can expose them and others to danger.

“Carefully select your friends, the University has zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractices, corruption and hooliganism. Those found culpable will be dealt with in line with our disciplinary mechanisms. LASU has what it takes to make you succeed in your respective course of study. Your welfare is top on our priority as we will ensure that the learning environment remains conducive for learning. Your security in and around the University is paramount as we have put in place adequate security measures.”

“We have a well-equipped University library for your use. We will ensure steady power supply to enable those who wish to study at night to do so comfortably. Our resourceful and diligent Academic and Non-Teaching Staff are always available and willing to mentor and assist you in becoming the best in your chosen careers. We also have the Guidance and Counselling unit where you can obtain professional advice on making the best out of life. We also have the Career Development Centre (LCDC) where you can be professionally advised on your career path and the Directorate of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship where you can acquire new skills and enhance those you already possess.”
