In recognition of his outstanding contributions to journalism and public service, renowned journalist Laolu Akande has been honored with a prestigious national award. The award, bestowed upon him by the Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, acknowledges his remarkable achievements and dedication to promoting excellence in the field of journalism.
Olalekan Adigun, a public affairs analyst who has closely followed Akande’s career and contributions, believes he is deserving of the coveted honor. He declared, “Akande’s wealth of experience which makes his National Honour by the Nigerian government a deserving one.”
Akande became the only Nigerian journalist to have ever interviewed a sitting American president, including George Bush at the White House. He also interviewed President Donald Trump, former US secretary of state, Collin Powell and a host of other powerful persons while in the United States.
While in diaspora, he led the Nigerian community in advocacy that led the US Government to designate Boko Haram as a Terrorist Organization meaning the US could then support their destruction.
As a journalist, Akande remains the first and only Nigerian journalist ever to interview a sitting US President in the White House. He is also Africa’s longest serving correspondent at the United Nations.
“This recognition comes as no surprise, considering Akande’s exemplary work and dedication to excellence,” he wrote in a recent piece made available to this medium.
