Land transport policy’ll address sector’s concerns – Minister

The federal government said that the new National Land Transportation Policy (NLTP) is designed to address major challenges facing the transport sector and make it a global competitor.

Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali while speaking in Abuja Thursday at a stakeholder’s validation forum, stated that the new policy, which will soon be sent to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has the potential to boost other areas of the economy such as agriculture, commerce, tourism, industry and blue economy among others.

His words: “I am aware that the salient question bothering our mind is -“Why a National Land Transport Policy (NLTP)?”.  It is pertinent to inform you that the National land transport policy is one of the short term deliverables that will engender the transformation of the land transport sub- sector, which is currently the weakest link in the transportation sector, although, it is the most burdened in the transport and logistics value chain.”

Alkali further emphasised that the National Land Transport Policy will not in any way deter the finalisation of the National Transportation Policy, but aims to develop a vibrant land transportation system that will reduce congestion, improve connectivity in both urban and rural areas and foster a sustainable and inclusive transportation system.

Earlier in his welcome address, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Michael Oloruntola, asked the stakeholders to adopt a forward-thinking approach, considering not only the immediate needs but also long-term vision for transportation in Nigeria.
