As the 2023 politicking gathers momentum, a former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has said old politicians should give way to younger generations to move the country forward.

Lamido, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made the statement at a time a former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, who is in his 70s, is aspiring to grab the ticket of the party for the presidency.

Receiving a delegation of the members of the PDP from Sokoto, who paid a courtesy visit on him, he expressed support for the presidential aspiration of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal come 2023.

The visit is part of the ongoing consultation by Tambuwal with major stakeholders preparatory for his formal declaration.

He advised the older generation of politicians to give way to the younger generations, who have fresh ideas.

Lamido said the country requires a leader with ideas, dynamism and creativity as well youthful energy and above all, competence to address the challenges bedevilling it.

He believed that Tambuwal possessed all the qualities to lead Nigeria – his education, impeccable character and clear-headedness – saying, he has been a Speaker of the country and a serving governor with vast political experience.

He stressed that the time for Nigeria’s political leaders to make personal sacrifices for the survival of democracy is now, adding ‘’people like us who are in our 70s are being called analogue and therefore, be phased out, we accept with grace that we are old.”

According to him, zoning should not be the issue in Nigeria’s political terrains.

Tambuwal said Nigeria was currently at a crossroads, and therefore requires leadership with a strong vision; a leadership that is capable of delivering to all sides of the political divides.

Tambuwal was accompanied by one of his predecessors and a former presidential aspirant, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, former National Chairman and the Board of Trustees of the PDP, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed, former deputy governor of Sokoto and former Minister of Water Resources, Mukhtar Shehu Shagari and Zamfara State deputy governor, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, among others.
