Lagos police arrest, detain trigger-happy officer over murder of Ajah resident

There is a video currently circulating on the Nigerian digital space with claims that a trigger-happy policeman shot dead a young man in the Ajah area of Lagos state.

Based on the video going around the social media space, it was gathered that the young man identified as Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah, had gone to buy petrol when he was gunned down by a police inspector.

While the culprit was disarmed and apprehended by his peers, the video showed other personnel of the Nigeria Police shooting teargas to dispel the crowd.

Reacting to the incident in a press release posted via the police’s official Twitter account, @PoliceNG, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the officer involved in the shooting had been apprehended.

The statement read, “At About 2330hrs of Tuesday, December 06 2022, a shooting incident involving men of Ajah Division, resulted in the unfortunate death of Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah. The officer behind the shooting, an Inspector of Police, was immediately disarmed and has been detained, as a full-scale investigation has commenced.”

It was further gathered that the family of the victims has been contacted about the incident.

“The Lagos State Police Command through the Area Commander, Elemoro and Divisional Police Officer, Ajah has since notified and established contact with the family.

“The Command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served,” the statement read.
