Lagos PDP threatens to expose chieftains using party’s name to solicit funds

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Saturday raised an alarm, alleging that some individuals are using the name of the party to solicit “unapproved financial and material support.”

The party which did not name the persons and groups which it noted were working with some of its chieftains, however threatened to expose them to the law enforcement agencies.

The Publicity Secretary of the party, Taofik Gani in a statement on Saturday described the actions of the unnamed chieftains and members as “disingenuous.”

Daily Trust on Sunday learnt that electioneering activities are gradually taking shape in the party ahead of the by-election to be conducted soon for the vacant seat of Lagos East Senatorial District.

The former occupier of the seat, Senator Bayo Osinowo passed away early this month.

It was learnt that the PDP’s statement followed findings that some aspirants who are eyeing the party’s ticket have been soliciting for funds.

But the party’s publicist explained that the party had decided that it would no longer put “scavengers, in whatever disguise” in positions of trusts.

“The offices of the PDP are for servants and not merchandise lords. Anyone who occupies office should not see it as opportunity to get rich, especially at the expense of cheerful givers in the society,” he added.

The PDP spokesman further identified a purported COVID-19 fund-raiser in the name of the party and its governorship aspirant; engineer Funsho Williams as one of the avenues to steal from innocent public.

He said the party’s organ has not at anytime approved of the fund raising.
